Just in case you didn’t know, Brazil is hosting the World Cup this year. From June 12th to July 14th, 64 football matches will be played across 12 Brazilian cities including Rio, Sao Paulo and the Amazonian city of Manaus. Not since 1978 when Argentina were the hosts (and the winners) has the tournament been played on South American soil.
It has not been without its controversies though – from unsafe working conditions and deaths of workers to the stadiums not being ready in time for the tournament. There have also been many protests from those who object to the rising costs of hosting the Cup who feel the money would be far better spent on services such as health and education.
Who qualified from South America?
Brazil are the hosts while the other South American qualifiers are - arch rivals Argentina and also Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay.
Even though Brazil are the favourites - you have to consider their talented Argentinian and Uruguayan neighbours as well as Colombia are all solid contenders. It is therefore looking likely that the Cup will stay in South America. All will be known on July 13th!
Many people will obviously be taking advantage of visiting the vast country of Brazil at this time in order to see some of the action live. There are plenty of tour operators who offer these especially designed football packages. The often expressed security concerns and of course the astronomical accommodation prices and other services will put many potential visitors off. That does not mean to say you cannot enjoy the South American atmosphere of the World Cup somewhere else close though.
Why not consider visiting one of the other partaking countries during the tournament to revel in the party atmosphere of Samba football? Their closest and biggest rivals, Argentina would be a great option - particularly so in Buenos Aires, where the atmosphere for the games will be electric. All the football mad countries – from Colombia down to Chile would be exciting alternatives to Brazil for watching the games.
And then once all the fun is over, it will be time to spend a few days relaxing and recovering at one of the continents charming haciendas or estancias!
