Impressions of South America often conjures up images of bandits, gangs, drug lords and other Hollywood inspired stereotypes. Of course it does have its fair share of criminals but no one should be deterred from visiting because of safety concerns. Uruguay is one of the calmest and safest countries in the world where the people are very open and friendly and the same goes for Chile. Argentina, which although ranks a little lower, still feels like a safe tourist destination. There are parts of Buenos Aires where pick pocketing can be rife but as long as you exercise caution, as you would while visiting any big cities in the world, you shouldn’t have a problem.
South America is one of the world’s greatest continents with a plethora of incredible sights to see with some of the friendliest and welcoming people. Don’t let any negative press put you off visiting, if you are sensible then you should have one of the best trips of your life.
