Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, is often overlooked on a tourist itinerary but this engaging city should be the obvious starting or finishing point for any trip to this great country. Surrounded by Andean peaks this metropolis is one of the liveliest and sophisticated in Latin America.
Most tourists will naturally gravitate to the historic and cultural heart, La Candelaria. Cobbled streets, colonial buildings, hotels, restaurants, cafes, churches and a plethora of interesting museums and attractions to visit, it makes the sensible place to base oneself.
In the glitzier north of Bogotá you will find the upmarket shopping malls, modern hotels and fancy restaurants and bars. It is also where you will see Bogotá's elite socialising on a night out with Zona Rosa being a favourite part of town.
In recent times Bogotá has made vast progress from being a city ravaged by drug wars to a more calm and bohemian city. It has cracked down on crime and has come out the other side to become a cool and much safer destination. It’s not an obvious looker in the sense of somewhere like Buenos Aires or Quito might be and it does takes a little effort to scratch beneath the surface. However, you will be glad you did.
Why not start your Colombian adventure at the beautifully restored and cared for, Hotel de La Opera, in the La Candelaria district?
