Colombia is one of South America’s most fascinating countries and after years of civil conflict and being overlooked it is now enjoying somewhat of a revival. Colombia’s tourist industry was affected by its reputation but now security concerns can be considered a thing of the past and as a result visitors are starting to pour in.
As their tourist industry is now changing quickly with more and more international visitors going to Colombia it is no longer considered to be such an undiscovered destination. It seems that their highly publicised campaign of, “The only risk is wanting to stay,” has been a great success.
Colombia is exceptionally well located on the continent and has incredible natural biodiversity. There is so much to see and enjoy here; the Andean region where the bustling metropolis of Bogota is found, the picturesque coffee zone, beautiful Caribbean beaches, steamy jungle, interesting archaeological ruins and atmospheric colonial cities. There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy such outdoor activities as surfing, whale watching and trekking. Travelling is made easier by a well developed infrastructure and hotels to suit all tastes and budgets.
Many consider Colombia to be a great example of three cultures; Indian, European and African. The people and culture vary as much as the landscape and climate with the more relaxed and laid back lifestyle found on the coast.
The country’s history is rich and complex and as a result Colombian culture has many influences, which are reflected in their food and drink, dance, music and their literature. It is a country of startling contrasts from jungle to beach and everything else in between. Some must sees include the beautiful walled city of Cartagena, the coffee region, Providencia, Santa Marta and Tayrona Park which has stunning beaches backed by lush jungle scenery. There are also some of South America’s most beautiful colonial towns to be found here.
